Looking after
your new tattoo.
A tattoo heals on the surface in two to four weeks, and a little longer underneath. These are the general steps we give everyone. Your artist may add something for your piece; their advice comes first.

01The first day
- Keep the wrap or film on for as long as your artist said: a few hours for a wrap, up to a few days for a clear film.
- Wash your hands before you touch the tattoo.
- Take the wrap off, then wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild soap without perfume.
- Pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
02The first two weeks
- Wash it gently two or three times a day.
- After washing, put on a thin layer of the aftercare cream your artist recommends. Thin is enough; the skin should still breathe.
- Wear loose, clean clothes over it, and sleep on clean sheets.
03What to avoid
- Swimming pools, the sea, baths and saunas until it has healed. A short shower is fine.
- Direct sun and solariums.
- Picking or scratching the flakes, even when it itches.
- Tight clothes or straps rubbing on it.
04While it heals
- A little redness, warmth and swelling in the first days is normal.
- Light flaking and itching around the end of the first week is normal too.
- The tattoo can look dull or milky while new skin forms. It clears as it heals.
05Once it has healed
- Use sunscreen on it in the sun. It keeps lines sharp and black deep for longer.
- Come back for a check after four to eight weeks. Your artist looks at how it healed and touches it up if it needs it.
06When to ask
- If the redness spreads, the area gets hotter or more painful after the first few days, there is pus, or you feel unwell or feverish, see a doctor.
- For anything else, or if you are unsure, write to your artist. A photo helps.
This is general guidance, not medical advice.
